London-wide organisation for the disability sector: report and recommendations released
London Councils has been working with representatives from the voluntary sector and many London funders to facilitate the development of a new second tier organisation for the disability sector in London to fill a long-recognised gap.
A consultancy firm, Equal Ability, was hired to do the feasibility work. They consulted London-based disability groups of all sizes about the types of support services they need and the structure that could best provide these services. Draft recommendations released in December 2007 went out to further consultation and a final report has now been produced with an action plan for the creation of a new organisation.
London Councils will now be taking steps to implement the consultant’s recommendations and establish the new organisation in partnership with the voluntary sector in 2008-9.
Please contact Clare Kiely, Policy & Grants Manager if you have any questions regarding this piece of work.
The report has been amended by the Steering Group to include explicit references to the Cultural Model of Deafness.
