Note from the Editor

Welcome to the July edition of the London Funders e-bulletin.

Highlights in this edition include:

• A fascinating report from the Church Urban Fund entitled ‘Projects in Crisis: A Learning Experience’ which reviews a sample of projects which have faced different kinds of crisis, examining the reasons why some church-based social action projects ‘fail' and offering strategies to avoid or deflect problems.

• ‘Turning risk into return’ a report from New Philanthropy Capital examining the potential for impact and rewards for grantmakers funding high risk projects.

• A preview of our autumn events diary packed full of inspiring seminars, project group meetings and details of our October members meeting on funding faith communities.

We are proud to report on members that have been supremely busy over the spring/ early summer period winning awards and accolades for their work. In our member update section we focus on some of these recent achievements including a Charity Awards effectiveness prize won by The City Bridge Trust for its greening the sector project. We would also like to congratulate Dinah Cox, Chief Executive of ROTA on her recent OBE – and her new job. Dinah will shortly be leaving ROTA to take up the helm at Rosa, the new UK Women’s Fund – we look forward to great achievement from this vital new foundation.

As part of the preparation for our May members meeting on funding young people in London, the London Funders Secretariat called for information from members on the different funds available for youth provision in London. The response was superb, resulting in a mapping document that gives a good overview of the scope and reach of funding available. We intend to update this document regularly and invite members to alert us to changes and updates in their funding or new funding streams as they become available. The current version of the mapping document is available for download on the London Funders website.

The May meeting was also used to host London Funders AGM, giving us an opportunity to celebrate our achievements and successes in 2007 and thank members for all their support during the last financial year. A copy of our annual report and accounts for the period ended 31 December 2007 has been sent to all members and a copy can be downloaded from our website.
